IMD Issues Red Alert as Telangana Braces for Extremely Heavy Rains

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued a red alert warning for Telangana on Monday, August 18, forecasting extremely heavy rains across multiple districts. Hyderabad city is also expected to witness rains or thundershowers, raising concerns of waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The alert comes amid warnings of thunderstorms, lightning, and squalls, which are likely to intensify the impact of the rainfall across the state.

The weather department has further cautioned that the heavy downpour will continue in the coming days, issuing an orange alert for August 19 and a yellow alert for August 20. Weather expert T. Balaji has predicted very heavy rains in northern and central districts such as Sircilla, Kamareddy, Siddipet, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Nirmal, Jagitial, Adilabad, and Asifabad. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also expected in Mancherial, Peddapalli, Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Warangal, Hanmakonda, and Sangareddy, while Hyderabad and its surrounding areas including Medchal-Malkajgiri, Yadadri-Bhongir, Vikarabad, and Rangareddy are likely to see light to moderate showers.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas. With rains forecast to continue till August 22, the authorities are on alert to respond to possible flooding, road blockages, and other weather-related emergencies. Citizens are urged to follow safety guidelines, keep track of official updates, and plan their movement carefully as Telangana braces for another spell of intense monsoon showers.
