Two foreign nationals lost their lives in a tragic incident at a luxury five-star hotel in Bengaluru after they were allegedly electrocuted while using the hotel’s swimming pool on Friday evening. The victims were identified as 57-year-old German national Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a Lufthansa crew member, and 45-year-old Slovakian national Juraj Horvat, a project manager with IBM. According to officials, the incident occurred when the two men entered the swimming pool, and an electric current is suspected to have passed through the area. A US national who attempted to rescue them, along with a hotel pool attendant, also suffered injuries and was admitted to the hospital. Both are reported to be in stable condition and out of danger.
Hospital authorities stated that the German national was brought dead, while doctors made extensive efforts to revive the Slovakian national through CPR before he was declared dead. The injured American guest reportedly jumped into the pool after noticing the victims in distress but received an electric shock during the rescue attempt. The hotel staff member who also entered the pool to assist sustained injuries and was treated for shock. The victims’ family has lodged a police complaint, alleging that negligence in maintaining the swimming pool led to the fatal incident. Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
In an official statement, the hotel management expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said it is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The management stated that the exact cause of the incident has not yet been established and will be determined by the findings of the authorities. Following the tragedy, the hotel’s website announced that the swimming pool would remain closed for maintenance from October 31 to November 30. The incident has sparked serious concerns over safety standards and maintenance practices at luxury hotels, particularly regarding electrical safety around recreational facilities used by guests.
