Mumbai witnessed a night of both excitement and chaos as pop icon Enrique Iglesias performed live at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Wednesday evening. While over 25,000 fans were mesmerized by the 50-year-old singer’s nostalgic hits like “Hero” and “Bailamos”, thieves were busy targeting the packed audience. According to police, at least 73 mobile phones — collectively worth ₹23.85 lakh — were stolen during the event. Seven FIRs have been registered so far, with victims including a makeup artist, journalist, students, and businessmen. The minimum concert ticket was priced at ₹7,000, drawing an affluent crowd and unfortunately, opportunistic criminals.
Investigators believe the thefts were planned, taking advantage of the crowd density and dim lighting during the show. Concertgoers discovered their missing phones only after the performance ended, leading to chaos outside the venue. Police have obtained CCTV footage from multiple angles of the MMRDA Grounds and are scanning resale markets to trace the stolen devices. They’ve also urged attendees to use the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) to block and locate their phones. This incident follows a recent surge in mobile theft cases at large entertainment gatherings in Mumbai.
Despite the security lapse, Enrique Iglesias’ debut Indian performance was described as electrifying and emotionally charged. Fans sang along as the Grammy Award winner delivered a 90-minute show of his biggest global hits. However, the theft spree overshadowed what was meant to be a memorable musical evening, raising serious concerns about crowd control and safety protocols at mega-events in India’s entertainment capital.
