The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has approached President Droupadi Murmu, raising objections to Kerala Governor Om Prakash Mathur’s official Instagram handle, alleging that it carries the name of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In its complaint, the student organisation argued that the use of a political party’s name by a sitting Governor is inconsistent with the constitutional principles of neutrality and impartiality expected from the holder of such a high office.
In an email addressed to the President, SFI Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Nandan M.A. stated that the Governor’s Instagram username, reportedly “ommathurbjp,” creates an impression of continued political association and could undermine public confidence in constitutional institutions. The organisation said that Governors are expected to function as impartial constitutional authorities rather than representatives of any political party, irrespective of their previous political affiliations.
The complaint also referred to Om Prakash Mathur’s past association with the BJP, including his roles within the party and his tenure as a Rajya Sabha member from Rajasthan. SFI urged the President to intervene to safeguard the dignity and political neutrality of the Governor’s office. As of now, Raj Bhavan has not issued any official response to the allegations. Mathur assumed office as the 29th Governor of Kerala on October 23, succeeding Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.
