Azharuddin, Kodandaram sworn in as Telangana MLCs, send strong political signal

In a key political development in Hyderabad, Mohammad Azharuddin and M. Kodandaram were sworn in as Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) under the Governor’s quota. The oath was administered by Gutha Sukhender Reddy in the presence of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and senior cabinet members. Their nominations were approved by Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla after a prolonged delay.

For Azharuddin, this was not just a routine appointment but a constitutional necessity. Having been inducted as Minorities Welfare Minister in October 2025, he was required to secure a seat in the legislature within a fixed deadline to continue in the Cabinet. Failure to do so would have forced him to step down. The clearance came after direct intervention by CM Revanth Reddy, who pushed for approval amid the pending nominations.

Kodandaram’s appointment, on the other hand, faced legal hurdles earlier, with challenges from nominees linked to the previous BRS regime. Despite that, both leaders used the occasion to send clear political messages. Kodandaram reiterated his commitment to public welfare, while Azharuddin hit back at critics, calling his nomination a “slap” to those who accused him of being inducted purely for vote-bank politics. The move signals Congress’s intent to strengthen its political grip and leadership structure in Telangana.
