Tensions Rise at Jamia as Students Protest RSS Centenary Event, Heavy Security Deployed

New Delhi: A protest erupted at Jamia Millia Islamia on Tuesday after students opposed a campus event marking 100 years of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Dozens of students gathered near the venue, raising slogans and demanding that the programme be cancelled, arguing that such an event has no place within the university campus.

The protest saw participation from over 50 students, mainly affiliated with groups like the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the Students Federation of India (SFI), along with other left-leaning organisations. Demonstrators blocked access points around the auditorium, alleging that attempts were being made to bring in guests through alternate entrances. In response to the escalating situation, a heavy police presence was deployed in and around the campus to maintain order.

The RSS event, part of the ‘Yuva Kumbh’ initiative celebrating its centenary, had already drawn criticism a day earlier, with student groups calling it a provocation given the university’s diverse and minority-heavy student base. University authorities had not issued an immediate response at the time, while similar protests in recent months across colleges under Delhi University suggest a broader pattern of campus resistance to such events.
