Man Digs Up Sister’s Remains After Bank Denies Withdrawal in Odisha

Keonjhar: In a shocking incident from Keonjhar district, a tribal man brought the skeleton of his deceased sister to a bank after repeated requests to withdraw money from her account were denied. The incident took place at a branch of Odisha Grameen Bank in Patana block, where Jeetu Munda, a 50-year-old resident of Dianali village, was trying to access ₹20,000 deposited in the name of his sister, Kalra Munda, who had passed away on January 26, 2026.

Frustrated after multiple visits, Jeetu Munda claimed that bank staff insisted on bringing the account holder in person despite being informed about her death. Unable to understand formal banking procedures due to lack of education, he exhumed his sister’s remains and presented them as proof. Police officials later stated that the man was unaware of legal processes such as nominee or legal heir claims, and that bank staff had failed to properly explain the procedure to him.

Following the incident, police intervened and assured that the withdrawal process would be facilitated as per legal norms. Authorities confirmed that Jeetu Munda is the sole claimant, as the nominee on the account had also passed away. The remains were reburied in the presence of police, while local administration directed the bank to ensure that the funds are released to him without further delay, exposing serious gaps in communication and accessibility within the banking system.
