NHRC Warns Telangana, Other States to Act Urgently as Heatwave Risk Intensifies

New Delhi: Raising serious concern over the increasing intensity and frequency of heatwaves, the National Human Rights Commission has directed Telangana and 20 other states, along with Delhi, to take immediate preventive measures to protect vulnerable populations. The Commission highlighted that extreme heat conditions are disproportionately affecting marginalized communities, especially those lacking proper shelter and resources.

According to the NHRC, groups at highest risk include the elderly, children, infants, outdoor workers, and the homeless, who are more exposed to severe health impacts during heatwaves. With temperatures in states like Telangana already crossing 45°C in several areas, the Commission stressed the urgent need for advance planning, including access to drinking water, cooling shelters, and medical support systems to reduce casualties and health emergencies.

Citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau, which recorded around 3,712 deaths due to heatstroke between 2019 and 2023, the Commission urged all states to strictly implement existing guidelines issued by the National Disaster Management Authority. It also called for coordinated action and detailed reports from districts to ensure that relief measures are effectively executed and the impact of extreme heat is minimized.
