Thiruvananthapuram, August 4, 2024: In a rare show of unity, opposition parties in Kerala have extended their support to the state government in its efforts to tackle the recent natural calamities and other pressing issues. United Democratic Front (UDF) MLAs have announced their decision to contribute to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF), underscoring the need for collective action in times of crisis.
The decision was announced following a meeting of UDF leaders, who expressed solidarity with the government and the people affected by the recent floods and landslides in various parts of the state. The funds contributed by the UDF MLAs will aid in relief and rehabilitation efforts, providing much-needed support to those impacted by the disasters.
UDF leader and former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy stated, “In these challenging times, it is imperative that we set aside our political differences and come together for the welfare of the people. Our contribution to the CMDRF is a step towards demonstrating our commitment to supporting the government’s efforts in rebuilding and providing relief to the affected communities.”
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed the gesture, thanking the opposition for their support and contribution. “This collective effort reflects the true spirit of Kerala. Together, we can overcome any adversity and ensure that our state recovers swiftly from the recent calamities. I extend my gratitude to the UDF MLAs for their generous support,” he said.
The recent floods and landslides have caused widespread damage across Kerala, displacing thousands and resulting in significant loss of life and property. The state government, along with various organizations and volunteers, has been actively involved in rescue and relief operations.
This bipartisan cooperation is expected to expedite the relief efforts and facilitate better coordination between various agencies involved in disaster management. As Kerala continues to grapple with the aftermath of the natural disasters, the unified response from both the government and the opposition offers hope for swift recovery and rebuilding.
Further updates on the relief efforts and the utilization of the contributed funds will be provided as the situation develops and more information becomes available.
