Mumbai Diwali Blaze: Firecrackers Spark Fire, Two Cars Gutted Near Hospital

Mumbai: A Diwali night celebration turned disastrous in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area after firecrackers allegedly triggered a major fire that gutted two cars near the Neelyog Vedanta building, close to Arogyadayi Hospital. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm on Monday, October 20, and was reported to the fire brigade shortly after. According to officials, flames quickly engulfed the parked vehicles, causing panic among nearby residents. Firefighters and police teams rushed to the spot and managed to control the blaze before it spread to adjacent buildings.

Eyewitnesses told authorities that the fire began moments after locals lit firecrackers in the narrow lane beside the hospital. “Within seconds, sparks from the fireworks landed on the car bonnet, and the flames spread fast,” said one resident. No injuries or casualties were reported, but both vehicles were completely destroyed. Fire brigade officials confirmed that the source of ignition was most likely from fireworks, a recurring hazard during Diwali celebrations in densely populated urban areas like Mumbai.

The incident has once again raised questions about the enforcement of firecracker safety norms during festivals. Despite repeated advisories and designated bursting zones, residents continue to flout fire safety rules, often resulting in property damage and life-threatening situations. Civic officials estimate losses worth several lakhs and have urged citizens to celebrate responsibly. Authorities have also warned that strict action will be taken against those found violating fire safety regulations, emphasizing that festive joy should not come at the cost of public safety.
