Himachal Pradesh Minister Vikramaditya Singh has retracted his earlier statement that the state government would mandate the display of names and IDs at eateries, similar to Uttar Pradesh’s recent order. Singh clarified that the decision was made to ensure people have access to clean and hygienic food, particularly street food, and to maintain internal security in the state. The minister stated that the directive has nothing to do with Uttar Pradesh’s recent order and is instead focused on ensuring that business establishments reveal their identity, regardless of whether the owners are from Himachal or outside the state.
The Congress government in Himachal Pradesh has distanced itself from Singh’s initial announcement, with a government spokesperson stating that no decision has been made regarding the mandatory display of nameplates or identification by vendors. The state government has formed a committee to review the street vendors’ policy, which will consider feedback from various societal groups before making a decision.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed Singh’s statement, calling it the right thing to do.
