Hyderabad, July 25, 2024 — In a significant operation to curb illegal drug storage, the Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA), in collaboration with the Prohibition and Excise Department, conducted a raid on a godown in Muduchintalpally, Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The godown, operated by Aspen Biopharma, was found storing bulk drugs containing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) without the required authorization. This raid is part of an ongoing crackdown on the illegal pharmaceutical trade in the region.

Details of the Raid
Acting on a tip-off, the DCA and Excise Department officials raided the godown and discovered a variety of drugs, including anticancer, antiviral, antifungal, anticoagulant, and antidepressant medications. The total value of the seized drugs is estimated to be Rs 96 lakhs. The drugs were found in LDPE bags, labeled only with the names of the bulk drugs or the code names of the APIs, without any batch or manufacturer details. This lack of proper labeling indicates unlicensed manufacturing practices.

Key Accused
The prime accused in this case is Kadari Sateesh Reddy, a repeat offender with several cases filed against him by the DCA. He is also the main conspirator in a spurious anti-cancer drugs case detected in Machabollaram in December 2023. Additionally, Sateesh Reddy is linked to the illicit manufacturing of APIs at Annarugudem village, Tallada mandal, Khammam district, uncovered in the same month. His involvement in these cases underscores a pattern of illegal activities within the pharmaceutical sector.

Public Health Risks
Drugs manufactured without proper licensing and regulatory adherence pose a severe threat to public health. They do not conform to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which require drugs to be produced in ISO-8 clean rooms. The lack of compliance with GMP standards means that these drugs may be contaminated or improperly formulated, leading to serious health risks for consumers. V B Kamalasan Reddy, Director General of the DCA, emphasized the dangers associated with such unregulated drug manufacturing and storage.

V B Kamalasan Reddy, speaking on the raid, stated, “This operation is crucial in our ongoing efforts to combat the illegal storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals. The seized drugs were being stored and potentially distributed without adherence to any regulatory norms, posing a significant risk to public health.” He further added that stringent actions will be taken against those found guilty of violating drug storage and distribution laws.
