Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the government will soon make an announcement regarding the census, which has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The census, initially scheduled to begin on April 1, 2020, will be conducted digitally, allowing citizens to self-enumerate through a portal that’s yet to be launched. This exercise is expected to cost over Rs 12,000 crore.
The census will include 31 questions, covering various aspects such as household amenities, education, and occupation. Citizens will be asked about their telephone, internet connection, vehicle ownership, and access to basic facilities like toilet, water, and lighting. The National Population Register (NPR) will also be updated simultaneously.
[news_related_post]The delay in conducting the census has resulted in government agencies relying on 2011 data for policy-making and subsidy allocation. Various political parties have been demanding a caste census, but the government has not made any official announcement regarding its inclusion. With the census expected to begin soon, citizens can anticipate a significant update in the country’s demographic data.
