Hyderabad’s Population Density Surges, Surpassing Delhi

Hyderabad has overtaken Delhi in population density, making it one of India’s most crowded metropolitan cities. According to the Telangana Statistical Abstract (ATLAS)-2024, Hyderabad now has 18,161 people per square kilometer, compared to Delhi’s 11,313. This surge is largely attributed to the city’s thriving IT industry, which continues to attract professionals, students, and entrepreneurs from across the country. The city’s well-established educational institutions, expanding infrastructure, and rich cultural heritage further contribute to its increasing appeal.

However, this rapid urbanization presents significant challenges for Hyderabad. The city is already struggling with overburdened infrastructure, rising housing demands, and increased pressure on public services. Traffic congestion, lack of affordable housing, and environmental concerns are growing issues that need urgent attention. While the density figures indicate economic progress, they also highlight the necessity for better urban planning and sustainable development.

Despite this surge, Hyderabad still falls behind some of the most densely populated cities in the world. Manila, in the Philippines, tops the global list with 43,079 people per square kilometer, while Mumbai remains India’s most crowded city at 28,508. On a broader scale, Telangana’s overall population density remains relatively low at 312 people per square kilometer, with projections estimating the state’s total population to reach 3.92 crore by 2031. Urban planners now face the challenge of balancing growth while ensuring a livable environment for the city’s expanding population.
