Election Results 2024: BJP-Led Mahayuti Claims Maharashtra, Opposition INDIA Bloc Secures Jharkhand

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has delivered a decisive blow to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra, capturing 217 out of 288 seats and securing an overwhelming majority. The alliance, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and Ajit Pawar’s NCP, has solidified its dominance in the state. Meanwhile, the MVA coalition of the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) trails far behind with only 58 seats. Fireworks and celebrations marked the BJP’s landslide victory, with party workers lauding the people’s faith in their “double-engine government.” In a closely watched contest, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar secured Baramati with a commanding margin, symbolizing Mahayuti’s strategic dominance.

In Jharkhand, the opposition INDIA alliance, led by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and RJD, appears set to retain control of the 81-seat assembly. The alliance is leading in 50 constituencies, surpassing the majority mark of 41, while the BJP lags behind with 29 seats. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who is leading comfortably in Barhait, attributed the alliance’s success to pro-people policies, including farm loan waivers and free electricity schemes. The results reflect a contrasting narrative, with voters in Jharkhand favoring stability under the INDIA bloc while Maharashtra swung in favor of Mahayuti’s promises of development and governance.

Beyond Maharashtra and Jharkhand, by-election results in states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and West Bengal have drawn attention. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) retained its stronghold in West Bengal, sweeping six assembly seats, while the Samajwadi Party gained ground in Uttar Pradesh. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of the Congress maintained a commanding lead in the Wayanad parliamentary bypoll in Kerala. The electoral outcomes, spanning multiple regions, highlight a mixed political landscape with BJP consolidating power in key states while opposition alliances continue to resist in others.
