A popular biryani outlet in Chennai’s Kodungaiyur was shut down by Food Safety Department officials on Thursday after around 40 people complained of vomiting and diarrhea after eating biryani from the outlet on Monday. The affected individuals were admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital and private hospitals, with 10 treated as out-patients.
According to Dr. P Satheeshkumar, designated food safety officer, the kitchen was found to be in an unhygienic condition, leading to the closure. However, food samples could not be taken for testing as the management had cleared out food items. The restaurant won’t be allowed to operate without submitting required documents like a license and has been given 15 days to comply.
[news_related_post]The Chennai Corporation stated that patients are being treated for their symptoms, but it’s yet to be confirmed if it was a case of food poisoning. Locals questioned why the authorities didn’t seal the shop, to which officials replied that sealing requires an order from the food safety commissioner, a lengthy process. In emergency cases, officials lock the premises instead.
