The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that over 22,500 people in Gaza have suffered life-changing injuries due to Israel’s military action. These injuries include severe limb damage, amputations, spinal cord trauma, traumatic brain injuries, and major burns, requiring long-term rehabilitation services. The WHO warns that Gaza’s healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with acute rehabilitation services severely disrupted and specialized care for complex injuries unavailable.
The severity of the crisis is compounded by the lack of essential medical supplies and assistive devices. Gaza’s only limb reconstruction and rehabilitation center, the Nasser Medical Complex, has been non-functional since December 2023 and was damaged in February 2024. Furthermore, 39 physiotherapists have been killed, and the majority of the rehabilitation workforce has been displaced. The shortage of critical health items in southern Gaza has reached 70%, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The WHO emphasizes the need for safe access to essential health services, including rehabilitation, to prevent further suffering. The organization calls for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate aid and rebuild the health system, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary care and support to rebuild their lives.
