The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued a cyclone alert for Tamil Nadu as the Northeast monsoon intensifies across the state, bringing widespread heavy rainfall. Multiple districts, including coastal and northern regions, have been placed under red alert, and the state government has declared holidays for schools and colleges as a precaution. Several parts of Chennai and nearby areas are already witnessing severe waterlogging, traffic disruption, and flooding in low-lying zones, prompting disaster management teams to remain on high alert.
According to RMC Director B. Amudha, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has developed into a well-marked system, currently located about 400 km southeast of Chennai. She stated that the system is expected to intensify into a depression by Thursday afternoon, potentially moving toward the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh. Meteorologists have warned that strong winds, ranging between 45 to 55 kmph, may hit coastal areas, accompanied by intense downpours and rough sea conditions.
Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow official advisories as emergency teams prepare for potential cyclone landfall scenarios. Fishermen have been strictly prohibited from venturing into the sea for the next few days, and shelters have been readied in vulnerable districts. The state government has mobilized rescue units, power restoration teams, and medical personnel, ensuring round-the-clock coordination to minimize damage and safeguard communities along the coast.
