Following the recent ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, the United Nations has emphasized the urgent need for extensive support across all sectors in the Gaza Strip. Muhannad Hadi, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, highlighted the critical necessity of strengthening the role of local community organizations and private sectors while addressing a press conference in Deir al-Balah. Essential areas like health, education, psychological aid, and shelter require immediate intervention to stabilize the lives of those affected by 15 months of conflict.

Hadi called for robust international assistance to rebuild the Gaza Strip and facilitate the return of families to their homes. According to UN data, nearly 69 percent of the region’s infrastructure, amounting to over 170,000 buildings, has been damaged or destroyed. The dire need for humanitarian aid has been underscored by scenes of long-awaited relief trucks crossing the Rafah border carrying essential supplies like food, clothing, medical equipment, and winter necessities, following months of restricted access due to Israeli policies.

The ceasefire, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, marks a hopeful pause in hostilities, offering the residents of Gaza their first sense of security in over a year. The initial 42-day truce is seen as a window to implement critical humanitarian measures and begin reconstruction efforts. However, sustained international support remains essential to alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s population and restore a semblance of normalcy.
