Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh continues to face the impact of Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall lashing several coastal districts and flash flood alerts remaining in effect. Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast that the system would weaken into a cyclonic storm by Tuesday afternoon, it remained severe as of 3:00 p.m. Gale winds of 95–105 kmph continued to batter the Andhra coast, posing a significant threat to low-lying areas and disrupting normal life across the region.
The India Meteorological Department has issued flash flood warnings for Bapatla, Guntur, Krishna, Eluru, Palnadu and Prakasam districts, citing a moderate flood risk due to the cyclone and storm surge. Bapatla remained one of the worst-affected districts, receiving more than 150 mm of rainfall on Tuesday. Between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Konanki recorded 182.25 mm of rain, Martur received 174.75 mm, while Edlapadu and Chilakaluripeta in Palnadu registered over 147 mm each. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has also warned of very heavy rainfall in Polavaram, Kakinada, NTR, Krishna, Bapatla and Palnadu districts as the cyclone continues to move inland.
According to weather officials, Cyclone Murasu crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast between Kothapatnam in Prakasam district and Chinnaganjam in Bapatla district during the early hours of Tuesday before moving north-northwest at a speed of around 8 kmph. By 1:00 p.m., the cyclone was located about 30 km north-northeast of Ongole and 40 km southwest of Bapatla. Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain indoors, avoid flooded roads, and follow official advisories as emergency teams continue monitoring the situation and responding to weather-related incidents.
