Visakhapatnam: Counting of votes for the Andhra Pradesh municipal elections progressed across the state on Tuesday under tight security, with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led NDA alliance recording significant victories in several municipal corporations and municipalities. The counting process began at 8:00 a.m. after strong rooms were opened in the presence of candidates and election agents. More than 5,000 personnel were deployed to ensure smooth counting, with 113 counting halls and 1,507 counting tables set up at Andhra University for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) elections.
As counting advanced, the TDP secured a major victory by winning the Machilipatnam Municipal Corporation and also established leads in the Tirupati and Kadapa Municipal Corporations. In the mayoral race for GVMC, the TDP maintained an early advantage over the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), while Jana Sena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Independent candidates also registered leads in several wards. Across the state, the NDA alliance strengthened its position by winning the Atmakur Municipality, where alliance candidates secured 16 of the 28 wards.
The TDP also won key municipal chairperson posts in Jaggayyapeta, Atmakur and Palasa, while Jana Sena candidates registered notable victories, including the Puttaparthi Municipality. Election authorities stated that counting remained peaceful under heavy police deployment, with district officials closely monitoring security arrangements at counting centres.
