Sukma: Security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district eliminated two Naxalites in a fierce encounter on Saturday morning. The gunfight erupted in a dense forest under the Kistaram police station area when a joint team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) personnel launched an anti-Naxalite operation. Acting on intelligence inputs about Maoist movement in the region, the forces initiated combing operations on Friday, which culminated in the deadly clash. Sukma Superintendent of Police Kiran Chavan confirmed that the search operation is still underway, and additional Maoist casualties are not ruled out.

The encounter is part of an intensified crackdown on Naxalite strongholds in Chhattisgarh, which has witnessed a significant decline in insurgent activities in recent years. So far in 2025, security forces have neutralized 83 Naxalites across the state, with 67 of them falling in the conflict-ridden Bastar division, which includes Sukma. The government attributes this success to improved intelligence gathering, sustained pressure on Maoist groups, and an increased presence of security forces in rebel-dominated areas. Officials believe that the ongoing operations will further weaken Naxal influence in the region and help restore stability.

Despite the successes of security forces, the Naxal insurgency remains a major challenge in central India, particularly in remote forested regions where Maoist groups continue to resist state authority. Authorities are focused on eliminating top Maoist leaders and dismantling their logistical networks while simultaneously implementing developmental initiatives in affected areas. With the latest encounter, security forces reaffirm their commitment to curbing insurgency and ensuring a safer environment for local communities in Chhattisgarh.
