Trump Threatens BRICS with 100% Tariffs Amid De-Dollarization Push

In a fresh warning to BRICS nations, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on their exports if they attempt to replace the U.S. dollar in global trade. The statement, made on January 31, 2025, reinforces his firm stance against de-dollarization efforts by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Trump, who has long opposed any move to diminish the dollar’s dominance, previously issued a similar warning on November 30, shortly after winning the 2024 election. He emphasized that the BRICS nations must maintain the dollar’s role or face severe economic consequences.

For years, BRICS members have explored ways to reduce reliance on the U.S. dollar, advocating for trade in their local currencies to counter Western financial dominance. While they have not yet introduced a common currency, several agreements between member nations have allowed trade settlements in local tenders, reducing their exposure to dollar fluctuations. China and Russia, in particular, have been at the forefront of pushing for alternative financial mechanisms, including digital currencies and bilateral trade pacts, as a means to circumvent U.S. sanctions and monetary policies.

Trump’s latest warning has drawn mixed reactions from global economic analysts and policymakers. Some view it as a continuation of his aggressive trade policies, while others believe it could escalate tensions between the U.S. and BRICS nations, potentially triggering retaliatory measures. The threat of steep tariffs could disrupt global supply chains and impact trade relationships, particularly with India and Brazil, which maintain significant trade partnerships with the U.S. As the global financial landscape evolves, the clash between the U.S. and BRICS over currency dominance is likely to shape future economic policies and international trade strategies.
