Trump Claims Modi Agreed to Stop Buying Russian Oil, Calls It a ‘Big Step’ Against Moscow

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, revealed that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will cease purchasing oil from Russia. Speaking at a White House event, Trump said he had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over India’s continued imports from Moscow. According to him, Modi confirmed that the process of halting Russian oil imports has already begun and would be completed soon. “I wasn’t happy that India was buying oil from Russia, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia anymore,” Trump told reporters, calling the decision a significant move in isolating Russia economically.

Trump added that the transition would take some time, describing it as a gradual but inevitable process. “You can’t do it immediately; it’s a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over soon,” he said. The former U.S. President emphasized that India’s decision marks a “big step” in the international effort to pressure Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. He also stated his next goal was to persuade China to take similar action and end its energy trade with Russia, highlighting his administration’s renewed push to consolidate global pressure against the Kremlin.

In his characteristically flamboyant tone, Trump praised Prime Minister Modi, calling him “a great man” and adding, “He loves Trump.” He went on to joke that he did not want to “destroy Modi’s political career.” The remark, half jest and half boast, underscored Trump’s attempt to project a friendly rapport with Modi while framing the commitment as a diplomatic victory for Washington. If confirmed officially, India’s withdrawal from Russian oil imports would represent a notable policy shift with potential economic and geopolitical consequences for New Delhi and its strategic autonomy in global energy markets.
