The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced significant progress in its ongoing Road Safety and Maintenance Drive, successfully repairing 15,925 potholes out of 18,087 identified across various parts of the city. The civic body said the initiative aims to enhance commuter safety and reduce traffic congestion caused by damaged roads. In addition to pothole repairs, GHMC teams have restored 805 catchpits, replaced 388 damaged manhole covers, and carried out repairs on 18 central medians, reflecting a city-wide effort to improve Hyderabad’s road infrastructure.
GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan emphasized that the goal is to ensure complete pothole-free coverage across all major and interior roads. He instructed all zonal and circle-level officials to prioritize both speed and quality in ongoing works, while minimizing disruption to traffic and public movement. “Our objective is not just to patch roads temporarily but to provide long-lasting, safe driving surfaces,” the Commissioner stated. Under his leadership, dedicated field teams have been mobilized round the clock, using hot mix asphalt and advanced repair techniques to withstand the upcoming monsoon conditions.
The corporation’s efforts come in response to increasing public complaints about deteriorating road conditions following recent rains. Officials claim that with improved coordination between engineering, sanitation, and traffic wings, the city is witnessing a visible improvement in major corridors such as Banjara Hills, Mehdipatnam, and LB Nagar. However, civic activists have urged the GHMC to adopt preventive maintenance measures rather than reactive repairs, warning that temporary fixes may not sustain during heavy rainfall. The GHMC has assured continuous monitoring and public feedback integration to achieve long-term durability in Hyderabad’s road network.
