Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has witnessed a historic moment in its 105-year-old Students’ Union history, with Nashra Naim becoming the first woman to be elected Vice-President. The election also marked a major milestone for women’s representation, as female candidates secured six of the 13 Students’ Union posts, including the vice-president’s position, while winning five out of ten cabinet member seats. Nashra Naim received 7,091 votes, defeating her closest rival by more than 1,200 votes. Following her victory, she credited her success to the dedication of her supporters, saying the achievement was made possible despite limited resources and a small campaign team.
The Students’ Union elections were especially significant because they were held after an eight-year gap, following prolonged demands and protests by students seeking the restoration of the electoral process. Alongside Nashra Naim’s historic win, Mohammad Noman Ashraf was elected President with a margin of over 4,100 votes, while Mohammad Hamdan secured the post of Secretary. Both newly elected leaders described the results as a major milestone for the university and pledged to work responsibly for the welfare of students. The election results reflected high participation and enthusiasm across the campus after years without student representation.
University officials described the elections as peaceful and democratic, with no incidents of violence reported during the campaign or voting process. AMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Naima Khatoon welcomed the successful conduct of the elections and praised the increased participation of women, calling it a positive step toward greater gender representation in campus leadership. Faculty members also noted that, unlike previous years, this election focused not only on campus issues but also on broader national concerns, making it one of the most closely watched Students’ Union elections in the university’s recent history.
