Three women journalists have alleged that they were sexually harassed by Delhi Police personnel while covering a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. One of the journalists accused an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of inappropriately touching and pushing her while she was recording police action during the demonstration demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The journalists also claimed that their complaints were not immediately registered when they approached a police station after the incident.
Delhi Police confirmed that it had received the complaints and announced that the matter has been transferred to the Crime Branch for a fair and impartial investigation. The Press Council of India expressed concern over the allegations, stating that journalists must be allowed to perform their duties without fear, intimidation or harassment. The Council urged the police to take immediate action on the complaints and ensure a safe environment for media personnel covering public events.
The incident has triggered strong political reactions, with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanding an explanation from Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Gandhi questioned why the police had allegedly failed to register an FIR despite the serious allegations and accused authorities of suppressing the voices of journalists and protesters. He also referred to reports of women protesters being mistreated and journalists being dragged or having their cameras snatched during the protest, calling for accountability from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which oversees the Delhi Police.
