Khartoum: A Sudanese military aircraft crashed in Omdurman, resulting in the deaths of at least 46 people, including both armed forces personnel and civilians. The Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday while taking off from the Wadi Sayidna air base, situated north of Omdurman. According to military and health officials, an additional 10 individuals sustained injuries in the tragic incident. The aircraft reportedly crashed into a civilian residence in the Karrari district, raising concerns that there may be more casualties on the ground. The cause of the crash remains unknown as authorities continue their investigation.
Sudan has been engulfed in a devastating civil war since 2023, following tensions between the country’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The ongoing conflict has resulted in widespread destruction, with reports of war crimes, including mass atrocities and ethnic violence, particularly in the Darfur region. The situation has deteriorated further in recent months as the Sudanese army has launched renewed offensives against RSF-held areas, seeking to reclaim key territories.
Meanwhile, RSF forces claimed responsibility for shooting down a military aircraft on Monday in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur province. The Sudanese military has not officially confirmed this incident. The intensifying war continues to displace millions of civilians, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis. International organizations have urged for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, but with both sides locked in fierce combat, the prospect of peace remains uncertain.
