SP Delegation Stopped by Police Amid Sambhal Violence Aftermath

The 15-member delegation of the Samajwadi Party (SP), led by senior leader Mata Prasad Pandey, was prevented by Uttar Pradesh police from visiting the violence-hit town of Sambhal on Saturday. The delegation, which included state President Shyam Lal Pal and other prominent MLAs and MLCs, was tasked with investigating the recent clashes and preparing a detailed report for SP National President Akhilesh Yadav. Despite the restrictions in Sambhal, the leaders planned to gather at the party office in Lucknow but were barred from leaving Pandey’s residence, sparking allegations of unconstitutional actions by the police.

The Sambhal clashes erupted during a court-mandated survey at the Mughal-era Jama Masjid, which is embroiled in a dispute over claims of a historic temple existing within its premises. Protests escalated into violence, with stone-pelting, arson, and firing resulting in the deaths of four youths and injuries to several others, including police personnel. As a precautionary measure, authorities imposed restrictions, suspended internet services, and increased security around the mosque. Although the area has since calmed, the political and social implications remain significant, with opposition parties seeking accountability and justice for the victims.

Mata Prasad Pandey condemned the police’s actions, asserting that the delegation’s fundamental rights were being infringed upon. “The ban in Sambhal cannot justify restrictions in Lucknow,” he stated, criticizing the administration for acting outside constitutional norms. Despite the police blockade, the SP remains determined to address the incident, underscoring the political ramifications of the violence as normalcy returns to Sambhal.
