A powerful heat wave that swept across large parts of the United States during the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations has claimed the lives of more than two dozen people, with authorities reporting the highest number of fatalities in New Jersey. According to state health officials, at least 29 people are believed to have died due to extreme heat across 10 counties. Most of the victims were found inside homes without air conditioning, highlighting the dangers posed by prolonged high temperatures.

Health officials said the victims included not only elderly residents but also younger adults, underscoring the widespread impact of the extreme weather. New Jersey Health Commissioner Raynard Washington stated that the heat emergency affected people across different age groups and urged residents to take precautions during periods of dangerously high temperatures. Emergency services remained on alert as soaring temperatures continued to affect several regions across the East Coast, Southeast, and Southwest of the United States.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill described the heat wave as the hottest stretch the state has experienced in more than 14 years, calling extreme heat the leading weather-related cause of death in the United States. Authorities have advised people to stay hydrated, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and ensure access to cooling centres or air-conditioned spaces. Officials also urged residents to regularly check on elderly family members, neighbours, and other vulnerable individuals as extreme weather conditions persist.
