Heavy monsoon rains continued to batter several parts of India on Tuesday, causing widespread disruption, flooding, landslides, and loss of life across multiple states. In Kerala’s Wayanad district, a massive mudslide struck the under-construction Anakkampoyil–Kalladi–Meppadi tunnel road project, leaving at least one person dead, seven missing, and seven others injured. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Wayanad and neighbouring Kozhikode districts after extremely heavy rainfall, while rescue teams were deployed to search for those trapped under the debris and evacuate residents from vulnerable areas.
Maharashtra continued to face severe monsoon-related challenges, with at least ten people losing their lives in rain-related incidents in Palghar district since July 1. More than 1,200 residents have been shifted to relief centres as flood-like conditions affected several areas. In Mumbai, rains eased temporarily after two days of intense downpours, allowing transport services to gradually return to normal, though schools and colleges remained closed as a precaution under an orange alert. Heavy rainfall also caused waterlogging in Surat, flooded rivers in Pune and Nashik, and triggered landslides in Ratnagiri, where rescue operations are continuing.
Several other states also witnessed the impact of the active monsoon. Delhi received heavy showers, prompting the IMD to issue red and orange alerts for thunderstorms, strong winds, and intense rainfall, while massive traffic congestion was reported across the capital. Schools were closed in parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu due to heavy rains, Uttar Pradesh recorded widespread rainfall bringing relief from the heat, and Rajasthan remained under orange and yellow alerts for heavy showers. Authorities across the country have urged people to avoid flood-prone areas, follow weather advisories, and remain alert as heavy rainfall is expected to continue in several regions over the coming days.
