Several vehicles travelling in Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s convoy were involved in a chain collision on the Purvanchal Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Sultanpur district while he was on his way to attend a court hearing. Rahul Gandhi’s vehicle was not involved in the accident, and he remained safe throughout the incident. According to police, the collision occurred near the 89.5-km mark under the Haliyapur police station limits when a vehicle belonging to local Congress leaders suddenly applied brakes, causing the vehicles following behind to crash into one another. The convoy briefly halted before resuming its journey towards Sultanpur.
The accident took place at around 10:15 am as Gandhi was travelling from Lucknow to Sultanpur to appear before a special MP/MLA court in connection with a 2018 criminal defamation case. Police officials stated that the vehicles involved were travelling behind Gandhi’s car, while security personnel were accompanying the convoy throughout the journey. Several vehicles in the convoy sustained visible damage, including an ambulance that is routinely part of Rahul Gandhi’s security convoy. However, Gandhi’s vehicle remained unaffected, allowing him to continue his travel without interruption.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether anyone was injured in the collision, and details regarding the extent of damage to the vehicles are still awaited. Police have begun examining the circumstances that led to the incident, while traffic on the expressway was quickly brought under control. The incident drew attention because it occurred while the Congress leader was heading to an important court appearance, though officials have maintained that his security was never compromised and the convoy successfully reached its destination.
