Calcutta High Court Bars Circulation of Modi-Adani Documentary Till January 31, 2027

The Calcutta High Court has issued an interim order prohibiting the publication, uploading, and sharing of a controversial documentary related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani until January 31, 2027. The order came after Adani Enterprises filed a defamation suit, alleging that the documentary contains false and defamatory statements that damage the company’s reputation. The court clarified that the restriction applies only to the disputed documentary and its reproductions, and does not prevent fair reporting or constructive criticism.

The court directed YouTube, X, and Instagram to immediately remove or disable access to the documentary, along with any clips, excerpts, or substantially identical versions identified in the petition. Social media platforms have also been instructed to preserve subscriber information, registration details, IP logs, and upload records related to the listed accounts and URLs. In cases where account holders cannot be identified, the platforms must submit the available subscriber information to the court in a sealed cover within the specified timeframe.

The interim injunction will remain in force until January 31, 2027, or until further orders of the court. The matter is scheduled to be heard by the regular bench in January next year. During the proceedings, Adani Enterprises argued that the documentary contains defamatory allegations and that the right to reputation is protected under Article 21 of the Constitution. The High Court emphasized that its order is limited to the disputed video and does not restrict responsible journalism, objective reporting, or legitimate public discussion on government policies or the Adani Group.
