Cyclone Arnab Strengthens Over Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh Braces for Landfall

Cyclone Arnab has intensified over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on the morning of October 28, prompting weather agencies to issue alerts across several southern states. The system is forecast to strengthen into an extremely severe cyclonic storm before reaching the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. Authorities have warned that the cyclone could bring sustained wind speeds of 115–125 km/h, with gusts reaching 140 km/h, increasing the risk of damage to coastal infrastructure, disruption to transport, and dangerous sea conditions.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across parts of southern India due to the cyclone and a separate low-pressure system near the Tamil Nadu coast. Orange alerts have been issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Mahe, where intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds are likely. Meanwhile, coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands remain under yellow alerts, with forecasts of heavy rainfall and localized flooding. Weather officials have cautioned that the cyclone’s track and intensity may still change as it approaches land.

Authorities have urged fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea as rough ocean conditions are expected to worsen over the coming days. Residents living in low-lying coastal areas have also been advised to closely monitor official weather updates and follow evacuation or safety instructions issued by local administrations. The cyclone, named Arnab by Bangladesh under the World Meteorological Organization’s regional naming system, is being closely monitored as emergency agencies prepare for its possible impact on Andhra Pradesh and neighboring coastal regions.
