Pune Waste Plant Building Collapse Claims 9 Lives as Final Victim Recovered

The death toll in the building collapse at a waste-to-energy plant in Pune has risen to nine after rescue teams recovered the body of the last missing worker during the early hours of Sunday, July 12. The tragic incident occurred on July 8 at the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s waste processing facility in Moshi, where a three-storey administrative building collapsed after a massive mound of garbage gave way and crashed into the structure like a landslide. Rescue personnel worked continuously for several days, successfully saving 14 people before concluding the search operation once the final victim was found beneath the debris.

Following the tragedy, Mahendra Ananthula, Group President of Antony Waste Group, expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and described the incident as an unforeseen natural disaster. He said the unusually heavy rainfall over the past several days had created conditions that could not have been predicted, calling the collapse an “act of God.” According to the company, all medical expenses of the injured victims will be covered, and efforts are being made to support the affected families during this difficult period.

The company also announced a compensation package of ₹25 lakh for the family of each deceased victim through its contribution and insurance coverage. In addition, one immediate family member of every deceased worker will be offered permanent employment, while the education expenses of their minor children will also be fully borne by the company. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over worker safety, structural stability, and disaster preparedness at industrial and waste management facilities, especially during periods of intense monsoon rainfall.
