India has confirmed that one of its nationals remains missing after a commercial vessel came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway off the coast of Oman. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), there were 11 Indian crew members aboard the commercial ship GFS Galaxy when the attack occurred. While 10 Indian nationals were rescued safely, search operations are still underway to locate the missing crew member. The Indian government condemned the attack, describing it as a matter of serious concern and reaffirming its commitment to ensuring the safety of Indian citizens working in the region.
The MEA stated that the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely coordinating with Omani authorities involved in the ongoing search and rescue mission. Expressing gratitude to the Omani government for its swift assistance, India also called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the Gulf region. The ministry stressed that attacks targeting commercial vessels and civilian infrastructure must stop and emphasized the importance of maintaining free and uninterrupted navigation through international waterways in accordance with international law.
The attack comes amid escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes. Reports indicate that the United States carried out multiple retaliatory strikes after the vessel sustained severe damage during the attack, while one civilian crew member also remains missing. The latest developments follow days of heightened military activity, diplomatic exchanges between Iran and Oman, and renewed concerns over the security of international shipping. The situation has intensified global attention on the Gulf region, with fears that continued instability could disrupt maritime trade and energy supplies worldwide.
