In a concerning incident on Friday, January 24, a 600 sq ft portion of the under-construction terminal building at Rajahmundry Airport in East Godavari district collapsed, causing minor injuries to two individuals. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. when a steel structure, part of the terminal’s support framework, bent and fell to the side. According to Airport Director S. Gnaneswara Rao, the roof of the terminal had not yet been laid, and the damage happened during the erection of the supporting steel structure. The injured were treated and discharged from the hospital shortly after.

Airport officials have ruled out sabotage as a cause of the collapse. A technical team from Vijayawada and representatives from Renaatus Projects, the Chennai-based contractor managing the construction, are investigating the incident to determine the exact technical reasons behind the failure. While the collapse caused temporary disruption, no major injuries or fatalities occurred, as the area was largely unoccupied at the time.

The incident raises questions about the safety protocols and structural standards adhered to during the construction of the terminal. Rajahmundry Airport, located in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district, is undergoing expansion to enhance its passenger handling capacity. Authorities have assured a thorough investigation to prevent such occurrences in the future.
