A tragic accident unfolded near Mumbai’s Gateway of India on Wednesday when a speedboat rammed into the Neelkamal ferry, causing it to capsize while en route to the Elephanta Caves. The incident has claimed the lives of 13 passengers, while over 80 people have been rescued by the Indian Coast Guard. The ferry, carrying 85 people, including crew members, started its journey around 3:15 p.m. before the collision occurred.
According to the Navy Spokesperson, the accident was caused by an engine malfunction during trials of an Indian Navy craft, which resulted in the vessel losing control and striking the passenger ferry. Rescue efforts have been extensive, with the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and local authorities deploying boats, helicopters, and personnel. Fishermen and officials from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority also contributed to the ongoing search and rescue operations.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed their condolences to the victims’ families. Singh emphasized that extensive search efforts are underway to locate the missing passengers. The Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a popular tourist destination, known for their ancient carvings and cultural significance.
