Bangladesh’s government has intensified its efforts to bring former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina back from India, with Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman stating that Dhaka has formally requested her extradition under the bilateral extradition treaty. Addressing reporters in Dhaka, the minister described Hasina as a convicted criminal following her conviction by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal. He said the government would pursue all legal avenues available and emphasized that the matter would be handled strictly according to law rather than political or emotional considerations.
The minister clarified that while the Law Ministry is not directly responsible for the extradition process, the Ministry of Home Affairs is coordinating the matter in line with the treaty between Bangladesh and India. He added that if India approves the request, Sheikh Hasina will be brought back through the legal process and presented before the relevant authorities. India has acknowledged receiving Bangladesh’s extradition request but has so far not announced any decision, stating only that the matter is being examined under established procedures.
Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August 2024 after leaving Bangladesh during a mass uprising that ended her 15-year tenure as prime minister. In November 2025, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal convicted her in absentia on charges related to crimes against humanity during the 2024 unrest, sentencing her to death on one charge and life imprisonment on another. Despite the convictions, Hasina has previously said she intends to return to Bangladesh, while the extradition issue continues to remain a sensitive diplomatic matter between New Delhi and Dhaka.
