Several MPs from the INDIA bloc, including key Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest in the Parliament premises, demanding an apology from Home Minister Amit Shah over his controversial remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Holding images of Ambedkar and raising slogans like “Jai Bhim” and “Amit Shah maafi maango,” the opposition claimed Shah’s remarks insulted Ambedkar and reflected deep-seated animosity toward the Dalit leader. The protest saw participation from Congress, DMK, RJD, the Left, and AAP leaders, with accusations that BJP and RSS harbored longstanding disdain for Ambedkar’s values.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Shah for allegedly undermining Ambedkar’s contributions and expressed that Ambedkar remains a “messiah” for Dalits, tribals, backward classes, and minorities. Meanwhile, Shah, during a debate on the Constitution’s 75-year journey, accused the Congress of treating the Constitution as a “private fiefdom” and engaging in appeasement politics. He also reiterated BJP’s commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code nationwide, starting with Uttarakhand.
The opposition alleged that the BJP-RSS agenda prioritizes Manusmriti over the Constitution. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi argued that those adhering to Manusmriti ideologies would naturally clash with Ambedkar’s vision. Meanwhile, Shah’s remarks, such as labeling repeated references to Ambedkar as “fashionable,” sparked outrage and calls for accountability from the opposition, further intensifying the political divide in Parliament.
