The niece of West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee was found dead at her residence in Kusumba village of Rampurhat, located in Birbhum district, on Tuesday. The 31-year-old woman, who was the daughter of Mamata Banerjee’s cousin brother, was found inside a room on the second floor of her house. Police reached the spot after receiving information and have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to family members, she had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past few years. They also stated that she had lost her teaching job after the Supreme Court cancelled appointments made in government-aided schools over alleged recruitment irregularities. Officials have not confirmed whether these factors were linked to the incident, and police said all aspects of the case are being examined as part of the investigation.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and authorities said the exact cause of death will be determined after the medical report and other procedural inquiries are completed. Police have urged the public not to speculate until the investigation concludes. Further details are expected after the post-mortem findings and the completion of the official inquiry.
