Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee was on Wednesday suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon Session over alleged use of “unsavoury” language against women Members of Parliament following a heated exchange inside the House chamber. The action came after the House reconvened in the afternoon, when the Chair referred to complaints submitted to the Speaker, stating that Banerjee’s remarks had hurt the dignity of the House. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal then moved a resolution seeking his suspension.

The resolution was passed by a voice vote amid continuous sloganeering by Opposition members over issues including the NEET paper leak. Following its adoption, the Chair directed Banerjee to leave the House precincts, after which the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day. Earlier, Banerjee had been involved in a verbal altercation with MPs of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), including Mitali Bag, Shatabdi Roy and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, though the exact reason behind the confrontation was not immediately known.

The exchange prompted several MPs to intervene and defuse the situation, while some NCPI members later met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to raise the matter. The incident comes against the backdrop of political tensions following the defection of several former Trinamool Congress MPs to the NCPI after the West Bengal Assembly elections. Those MPs have since aligned themselves with the NDA and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding to the ongoing rivalry between the two groups in Parliament.
