Tension escalated at Jamia Millia Islamia after protesting students were forcibly removed from the university campus during the early hours of Saturday, triggering fresh demonstrations outside the main gate under heavy police deployment. The protest, which centres on the demand for student union elections, intensified after reports emerged that one student had been rusticated and two others suspended. Protesters alleged that university security personnel switched off the lights before manhandling and dragging them out of the campus, after which they were handed over to the Delhi Police. Although the detained students were later released, the incident sparked widespread outrage among supporters.
The university defended its actions, stating that security staff acted in self-defence after being allegedly abused and attacked by protesters. Officials maintained that Jamia already provides student representation through elections held at individual academic centres and departments, arguing that this system functions more effectively than a centrally elected students’ union. The administration also issued notices accusing protesters of encouraging students to gather for Friday prayers at the protest site instead of nearby mosques, claiming such gatherings could disturb campus discipline, peace and communal harmony.
Videos circulating on social media showed large crowds assembling outside the university gates, with some protesters pushing through the entrance despite police attempts to stop them. Delhi Police stated that no students were formally detained and clarified that only individuals attempting to forcefully enter the campus were removed from the area. The incident has reignited the debate over student representation and administrative policies at Jamia Millia Islamia, while the protest movement continues amid heightened security and growing demands for dialogue between students and the university administration.
