A devastating accident occurred in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district when a speeding truck carrying paddy entered a restricted no-entry zone and crashed into devotees gathered outside the historic Sheetla Mata Temple during Navratri celebrations. The truck ploughed through roadside shops, broke police barricades and slammed into the temple entrance, causing a section of the boundary wall to collapse. Fifteen people, including several teenagers, lost their lives, while more than 25 others, including two police personnel, sustained injuries. According to officials, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, prompting a large-scale search operation.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck may have suffered a brake failure, forcing the driver to lose control. Authorities stated that the vehicle entered an area where heavy vehicles were strictly prohibited, raising serious questions about security arrangements despite the presence of thousands of devotees waiting for darshan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for the families of each deceased victim and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also announced financial assistance, ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, removed the City Superintendent of Police and suspended eight police personnel over alleged negligence.
The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage among victims’ families, who questioned how a heavy truck managed to breach security and reach the temple premises. Many relatives demanded accountability, alleging that even bicycles were normally not allowed in the restricted zone. The injured were shifted to hospitals across Gwalior for treatment, while officials continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident. The state government has assured strict action against those found responsible and said security measures at religious gatherings will be reviewed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
