Israeli Military Admits ‘Complete Failure’ in Preventing October 7 Hamas Attack

The Israeli army has officially acknowledged its failure in preventing the October 7 attack by Hamas, admitting that years of underestimating the group’s capabilities led to one of the worst security breaches in Israel’s history. According to the findings of an internal probe, the military misjudged Hamas’s intentions, believing that the group was not interested in a full-scale conflict. This overconfidence resulted in a lack of preparedness and an overreliance on intelligence reports, border security measures, and defensive barriers. The report also highlighted that Israel had diverted much of its military focus to Hezbollah in Lebanon, leaving the southern front vulnerable. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,139 people in Israel and the abduction of more than 200, led to widespread criticism of the Israeli government and its military leadership. The Israeli military’s failure to respond effectively during the assault raised serious concerns about its strategic oversight and intelligence operations.

In response to the revelations, several high-ranking officials have already stepped down, including Israel’s spy chief Aharon Haliva in 2024 and military chief Herzi Halevi in January 2025. The army’s southern command head, Yaron Finkelman, also resigned, taking responsibility for the failures. Halevi admitted that the military had been blindsided by the scale and strategy of Hamas’s assault, which took place in three coordinated waves. The first wave saw over 1,000 Nukhba fighters infiltrate Israeli territory under heavy artillery fire, disrupting military communication and command centers. The second and third waves involved thousands of additional fighters and civilians breaching Israeli defenses, further overwhelming security forces. The chaos of the attack exposed critical weaknesses in Israel’s military response, with reports suggesting that in some cases, Israeli forces may have mistakenly fired on their own civilians to prevent them from being taken hostage.

Following the release of the report, opposition leader Yair Lapid intensified calls for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to establish an official government inquiry into the attack. Lapid praised the military for conducting an internal investigation with “courage and integrity” but accused Netanyahu’s administration of attempting to evade responsibility. Public outrage over the handling of the attack has fueled demands for Netanyahu’s resignation, as many Israelis hold his government accountable for the security lapse. As the fallout continues, the revelations from the military probe may have lasting implications for Israel’s defense strategy and political landscape.
