The Telangana government plans to expand the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) by merging surrounding municipalities, creating a Greater City Corporation (GCC) or multiple corporations within the Outer Ring Road (ORR). This expansion aims to accommodate the city’s rapid growth and establish a sustainable urban environment. The integration of 24 municipalities into GHMC is expected to begin in January 2025.
The proposed GCC will cover an area of 1,800 to 2,000 square kilometers, up from the current 650 square kilometers. To manage this vast jurisdiction, officials suggest dividing the territory into three corporations, each covering approximately 600-650 square kilometers. The expansion will balance developed and underdeveloped zones, ensuring financial sustainability and equal distribution of essential services.
