Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has supplied more than 11.07 lakh litres of treated water under its Green Tanker initiative, aimed at promoting the use of recycled water for non-potable purposes. According to the water board, a total of 79 green tankers completed 124 trips across the city by 6:30 pm on Monday, distributing treated water produced at 18 sewage treatment plants (STPs). The initiative is designed to reduce the dependence on precious drinking water resources.
Of the total 1,107 kilolitres of treated water supplied, 609.5 kilolitres were delivered to various government departments, while 497.5 kilolitres were supplied to private users. The Cyberabad region received the highest allocation with 505 kilolitres delivered through 34 trips made by 14 tankers. Hyderabad city received 295.5 kilolitres through 54 trips by 36 tankers, while Malkajgiri received 306.5 kilolitres through 36 trips using 29 tankers.
The HMWSSB has been encouraging the use of treated water for construction activities, gardening, landscaping, parks, and other non-drinking purposes as part of its sustainable water management strategy. Officials believe that increasing the use of recycled water will help conserve potable water supplies, especially as Hyderabad continues to witness rapid urban growth and rising water demand. The Green Tanker programme is expected to play a key role in promoting responsible water usage across the city.
