The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal due to the vigorous North-East monsoon. Districts such as Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi are on high alert, with heavy rainfall anticipated in regions including Chennai, Kancheepuram, and Nagapattinam. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for other districts, warning of thunderstorms and lightning. Over 72 locations experienced heavy rainfall in the past 24 hours, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions. The low-pressure system in the Gulf of Mannar remains stagnant but is expected to weaken soon.
In light of the forecast, schools and colleges in Chennai, Villupuram, and nine other districts have been closed as a precaution. Puducherry and Karaikal have also declared holidays for educational institutions. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea in specified coastal regions due to rough conditions and high winds. Deputy Director General Balachandran of the Chennai Meteorological Department confirmed that isolated heavy rainfall will continue in the coming days. Local authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories.
The persistent rainfall has disrupted daily life and caused localized flooding in low-lying areas. Vendors in affected regions are adapting to the conditions, with reports of brisk sales of rain gear. The IMD’s updates emphasize the need for preparedness, as the North-East monsoon continues to bring challenging weather to Tamil Nadu and neighboring territories.
