Heavy Rain Forces School Closures Across Five Tamil Nadu Districts

Continuous heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life in several parts of Tamil Nadu, prompting authorities to shut schools in five districts on October 22. District Collectors of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi and Tirupattur announced holidays for schools after persistent downpours and forecasts of more intense rainfall. While schools have remained closed as a precautionary measure, no announcement has been made regarding the closure of colleges or other higher educational institutions in these districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has developed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka, close to the Tamil Nadu coast. The weather system is expected to move west-northwestward, bringing widespread rainfall to coastal Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery delta region and several interior districts. Authorities have placed 17 districts on high alert, warning that many areas could witness very heavy rainfall over the coming days, increasing the risk of flooding and disruption to daily life.

The districts under the weather alert include Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Coimbatore, the Nilgiris, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai. Officials have also warned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to rough weather conditions along the coast. The state administration is closely monitoring the situation and has urged residents to remain cautious, follow official advisories and avoid unnecessary travel in areas likely to experience heavy rainfall.
