Eknath Shinde Resigns as Maharashtra CM, Appointed Caretaker Chief Minister

Mumbai: In a significant political development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde resigned from his position on Tuesday morning, following the conclusion of the assembly elections. Shinde submitted his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan at the Raj Bhavan, accompanied by deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. The governor has requested Shinde to continue as the caretaker chief minister until a new leader is sworn in.

Despite the overwhelming victory of the Mahayuti alliance—comprising the BJP, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—securing 230 seats in the 288-member assembly, internal disagreements have delayed the selection of the next chief minister. The term of the current Maharashtra assembly concludes on November 26, leaving the ruling coalition little time to finalize its leadership.

This resignation and the ongoing deliberations come amidst speculation about power-sharing arrangements within the Mahayuti alliance. Analysts believe the delay in announcing a consensus candidate for the top post reflects the challenges of balancing the ambitions of key leaders in the victorious coalition. Meanwhile, political observers are closely monitoring the situation as Maharashtra prepares for the next phase of governance.
